Montmorency
Forest occupies 66 square kilometers in the foothills
of the Laurentian Mountains, some 70 km north of Quebec
City. It is located in a humid boreal environment of
Balsam Fir stands.
Since 1964, this teaching
and research forest has served mainly as a laboratory
for undergraduate, Master's, and doctoral students in the
Forestry
and Geomatics Faculty. The site also attracts
students and researchers in other disciplines from
Université Laval and elsewhere.
Montmorency Forest is intended to demonstrate the
sustainable development approach to forest planning.
Through integrated ecosystem planning open to public
discussion and approval, it attempts to strike a balance
between all the environmental, social, and economic
considerations that affect the forest.
Montmorency Forest is also a popular
outdoor destination for members of the university
community who enjoy fishing, cross country skiing,
hiking, and other pursuits.
