Keeping IT Learner Centred: Is It Possible? As distance learning professionals we can not be blind to the mushrooming presence of the information and communication technologies in our domain. However, the development of new technologies in education, and, especially, Distance Education, have not yet provided solutions to resolve the perennial problem: the educator, gasping to master new tools, while running after the train rolling down the track of technology toward goals which have objectives that, at times, appear to be more economic than pedagogical. IT does not always have the best interests of the learner at heart. As Distance Learning educators... What do we see? The information highway, multimedia and the video-conference, etc. offer us a potential for both dreams and nightmares because of the kind of rapport they foster with the learner and, the fact, that the majority of learners do not yet have access to the world of computers. What are we contemplating? Will the information highway only be a medium for relaying information and presentations or a panacea? Can it give added value to learning and teaching? Should we look for ways to increase ITs power and number of applications? Can we create favourable conditions for the learners to fully develop their human potential? Can we create? Will a world-wide technological learning environment include a human dimension? Will this environment and its ramifications, intellectual, affective and social, support the development of a well-rounded individual? And as CADE members can we influence... the IT industry to focus on products and technologies which are more learner accessible and user-friendly?
