History

In 1977, inspired by the First International Congress on Adapted Physical Activity (SIAPA), eleven people representing a variety of countries gathered together to form the "Fédération internationale en activité physique adaptée" (FIAPA). In 1989, in Berlin, this federation was dissolved and replaced by the "International Federation for Adapted Physical Activity" (IFAPA). This federation still exists and, following its International Congress in Vienna in 2001, will hold its next Congress in South Korea in 2003.

In conjunction with these international activities, the Canadian researchers formed, in the beginning of the 1980s, a new Canadian foundation, in order to maintain several philanthrophic, academic, and research activities in the field of adapted physical activities (APA).

In February 1984, the new Canadian Motor Adaptation Foundation (M.A.F.) replaced the SIAPA, in order to maintain continuity in the field of rehabilitation. The M.A.F. was incorporated in 1984 under the Canadian laws.

The M.A.F. is a charitable organization with a few decades of reflection, and has organized several local, national and international events.

With its team of highly-qualified multidisciplinary team of individuals, the M.A.F. hoists a solid reputation in the field of rehabilitation in organizing events related to:

  • health sciences,

  • physical education,

  • sport.

Over the years, the members of the M.A.F., with the help of several experts from different backgrounds, have exchanged their knowledge on the issue of rehabilitation through the development of an active and healthy lifestyle.

La recherche, les échanges d'expérience et la sensibilisation ont été les divers moyens utilisés pour faire avancer la cause de la réadaptation.

M.A.F. Realizations

Research, experience, and awareness campaigns have been the means to highlight rehabilitation as an important cause.

  • The Third International Medical Congress on Sport for the Handicap Person (1994),
  • The Eleventh International Symposium on Adapted Physical Activity (1997),
  • The First Québec International Symposium on Cardiorespiratory Rehabilitation (1999),
  • The Second Québec International Symposium on Cardiorespiratory Rehabilitation (2001).

M.A.F. is active

The Foundation is still active and proposes itself new challenges such as:

  • To organize the World Congress of "Rehabilitation International", in 2008 in Quebec City,

  • Acting as a futurist in order to encourage the elderly and special populations to adopt an active lifestyle,

  • To help the elderly participants to become more efficient in their contacts with their peers,

  • To organize scientific and promotional events.
