Research project

User-Centered e-Health

Project Description

The overall research goal of Dr. Holly Witteman's team are to improve people's health through digital health applications. Drawing on her PhD in human factors engineering and postdoc in social sciences, Dr. Witteman's research tackles the design and evaluation of digital health, along with surrounding issues. She specializes in human-computer interaction in health education, communication, and decision making, including methods for inclusive design.

Research activities primarily address: (1) in partnership with patients and health professionals, designing interventions (e.g., elements of digital health) that are adapted to the people who will use them, and (2) evaluating these interventions. We conduct evaluations (i) in our human-computer interaction lab equipped with psychophysiology infrastructure (e.g., eye tracking, galvanic skin response, electroencephalogram or EEG) thanks to the Canada Foundation for Innovation, (ii) online (e.g., randomized experiments) and (iii) in the field (e.g., pragmatic trials, user experience evaluations in the field). Each trainee's project is situated within this overall research program. Trainees join a collegial, interdisciplinary team in which they receive individualized mentorship and support to attain their career goals. Given the interdisciplinary nature of our team's research, most trainees benefit from co-supervision by colleagues of Dr. Witteman's at Laval University or at other institutions (e.g., University of Toronto).

We welcome applications from any students interested in our research. We are currently particularly interested in students who would like to build their skills in web programming, health informatics, and advanced analytical methods such as machine learning.

Research Field

- User-centered design (human-centered design, design thinking, etc.)
- Interface design
- Software engineering
- Human-computer interaction
- Public health
- Health communication
- Quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods

Research Supervisor

Holly Witteman

Research Environment

Laval University

Our research team and lab are situated at Laval University, in Pavillon Ferdinand-Vandry. This means that our offices and lab are near rooms where most classes are held, as well as all the amenities at Laval University. We are also affiliated to three research centres: Laval University's primary care research centre (Centre de recherche sur les soins et les services de première ligne de l'Université Laval, le CERSSPL-UL, cersspl.ca), Laval University's academic medical research centre (Centre de recherche du CHU de Québec-Université Laval, crchudequebec.ulaval.ca) and the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (ohri.ca).
