Objectives

  • carry out leading edge fundamental and applied research along 3 main axes:
  • disseminate research results in the best scientific journals and conferences
  • train highly qualified personnel in computer vision and related fields
  • enhance transfer technologies to the user domain
  • promote the activities of the Chair and increase its visibility within the community of computer vision and in the public

The NSERC-Creaform Research Chair addresses fundamental problems in 3D vision while emphasizing the development of experimental prototypes to validate the results of research.

This research is done in close collaboration with Creaform, a company specializing in 3D technology and a world leader in 3D scanning.

Current 3D modeling needs for metrology are of 2 main types:

1- The precise measurement of objects requires high resolution, which leads to very large models that need to be visualized in real time in modern inspection processes. The "billion vs microns" challenge therefore needs to be addressed because we must deal with billions of points and represent details of a few microns.

2- High-precision 3D capture requires sophisticated visualization capabilities to allow non-specialized users to exploit 3D sensors in their inspection tasks. The research program addresses these challenges.

The Chair carries out research along 3 mains axes:

  • billion vs microns
  • visualization and interfaces
  • light - surface interaction

Mission

Explore fundamental problems in 3D vision and propose innovative solutions of strategic interest for the industrial partner.

Research impacts

Industrial inspection, reverse engineering and iterative design are activities of great economic value in all areas of the manufacturing sector. The research will contribute  to fill the needs in this area.

The demand for highly qualified personnel in the areas of 3D sensing and 3D modeling is very high. The Chair actively contributes to the training of researchers able to meet the needs of companies in this sector and maintain their competitiveness.

The concepts developed in the chair's research program aim to define the next generations of 3D sensors and have a high potential for medium-term technology transfer.
