In the world of Canadian university sport, the Rouge et Or name sets a gold standard for excellence. Université Laval’s sports excellence program has won acclaim year after year for over 60 years, and all signs point to continued success.
A showcase for Université Laval nationally and even internationally, the dynamic Rouge et Or program serves as a promotional tool for the renowned university, thanks to its superior facilities, the outstanding expertise of university Sports Service personnel, and the invaluable support of the varsity coaching staff. The program boasts 14 athletic disciplines (track and field, badminton, basketball, cheerleading, cross-country, football, golf, swimming, rugby, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, soccer, triathlon, and volleyball), and nearly 400 student athletes.
In 2013 the Rouge et Or program adopted an inspiring slogan that incarnates its purpose: DE GLOIRE ET D’EXCELLENCE. Rouge et Or student athletes pursue the quest for glory and excellence every day, both on the playing field and in the classroom. Each and every one of them strives to embody this principle as they pursue the same goal: to be part of the best university athletic program in the country.
The athletic feats of the Rouge et Or teams are common knowledge and widely reported in the media. The football team—the most decorated in the history of the sport in Canada with its eight Vanier Cup victories (1999, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, and 2013)—is the best known varsity squad. Four other teams have also risen to the top of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) standings. The most recent is the women’s soccer team, which took the national title in November 2014—a first for the program. The men’s volleyball team is a four-time Canadian university championship winner (in 2013, 1990, 1992, and 1994), while the women’s team claimed the top spot in the varsity standings in 2006. The men's soccer team did the same in 2009.
The golf, badminton, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, and cheerleading teams, as well as the former Rouge et Or diving, hockey, and baseball clubs have also each taken home at least one Canadian title, outside CIS. And the many provincial championships won by all Rouge et Or teams clearly speak to the program’s tremendous success.
Rouge et Or student athletes also have a solid reputation for academic success, and their performance in the classroom is perhaps an even bigger source of pride for them. For several years now, CIS has maintained a ranking of the university sports programs with the most athletes earning academic averages of 80% or higher. Rouge et Or student athletes, who belong to CIS, are always ranked among the top spots on this prestigious list, and have occupied the number one spot five times since 2007 (2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2012).
The Rouge et Or program is always looking for motivated student athletes who are dedicated to their sport. It’s a source of pride for Université Laval and the entire Québec City area, offering athletes an exciting and stimulating environment with unique athletic facilities, professional coaching, and a university campus bursting with activities!
The Rouge et Or program of excellence is one of the strongest and most highly regarded in the Canadian interuniversity network. Its teams have won numerous provincial and national titles since the program was created in 1950.
The main objective of the Rouge et Or program is to support students in their quest for academic and athletic excellence, and we do everything to help them achieve excellence every day.
