Internet access on campus (Wi-Fi)
Université Laval offers its students free access to the Eduroam wireless network. This network provides full coverage of the Québec City campus and most of Université Laval’s off-campus buildings.
Mobile phone plans
Before buying a cell phone or activating a phone from your country or province, visit the websites of several companies to compare prices. Please note that mobile phone plans can vary greatly from country to country. Find out about the various packages and options available before making your choice. Bundles of services (e.g., internet and mobile phone service) can often offer good value for money.
Once you’ve selected a service provider, you have 2 options:
- Choose prepaid cards that allow you to add funds to your account yourself.
- Sign up for a monthly plan.
Important: If you choose a monthly plan, please check what is and isn’t included in your phone plan, and select the options that best suit your needs.
International calls are generally not included in plans (even those with unlimited calling) and are billed by the minute.
Making calls in Québec
What you need to know to make calls in Québec:
- Using a local phone line allows you to make free, unlimited local calls (in terms of both number and duration).
- A local call consists of 10 digits (e.g., numbers starting with 418 or 581, such as 418-656-2765).
- A long-distance call in North America consists of 11 digits and is not free (e.g., 1-418 or 1-514-XXX-XXXX).
- Numbers starting with 1-900 or 1-976 are premium-rate numbers.
- Numbers starting with 1-800, 1-833, 1-844, 1-855, 1-866, 1-877, and 1-888 are always toll-free.
- If you are calling from a phone at Université Laval, you must dial 9 before you can make any calls outside the campus.
- For international calls, dial 011, followed by the country code, the area code, or the city code, and then the desired number.
