Charles Brindamour

Business Leader, Builder, and Philanthropist
Université Laval Honorary Doctorate

An influential leader in the global property and casualty insurance industry, Charles Brindamour is CEO of Intact Financial Corporation. Since 2008, he has profoundly transformed the company and worked to redefine the standards of performance, governance, and resilience in this key economic sector.

After earning a degree in actuarial science from Université Laval in 1992, Charles Brindamour began his career with the Dutch multinational group ING. At the age of 37, having held increasingly senior positions within the company in Canada and abroad, he was appointed CEO of ING Canada in January 2008.

During the global financial crisis when ING was looking for options to replenish its capital, Mr. Brindamour and his management team raised the necessary capital to buy back the insurance business in Canada, thus creating Intact Financial Corporation.

Under his leadership, Intact has established itself as a global leader in property and casualty insurance through a disciplined growth strategy marked by major acquisitions, including AXA Canada, OneBeacon Insurance Group, and RSA Insurance plc, with operations in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Europe. This trajectory has resulted in exceptional value creation and market capitalization exceeding $45 billion.

Beyond financial performance, Charles Brindamour has set an example by pioneering a business model that incorporates climate change adaptation, responsible governance, and societal issues. His expertise is regularly sought out by governments and international organizations, and his social engagement is also reflected in his involvement on various boards and strategic committees in Canada and around the world.

Charles Brindamour is deeply attached to his alma mater and has an enduring connection with Université Laval. As a committed philanthropist and ambassador, he has contributed greatly to the development of academic chairs, the creation of scholarships, and ensuring support for the next generation, particularly in relation to actuarial science, artificial intelligence, and risk management.

Université Laval is pleased to award an honorary doctorate to Charles Brindamour in recognition of an exceptional leader who has succeeded in combining financial performance, social responsibility, and rigorous governance and whose vision for sustainability continues to shape a balanced, resilient business model with a positive impact on society.
