Animal protection

Université Laval cares about the well-being of the animals used to conduct research and teaching activities.

It holds a Certificate of Good Animal Practice from the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC).

The Vice Rector, Research and Innovation ensures, among other things, that a mechanism is in place to certify the scientific and pedagogic merit of proposed projects involving the use of animals. They also ensure that a well-designed, structured, and functional animal care committee is in place.

Université Laval animal protection committee

Any researcher wishing to use animals in a research project or teaching laboratory must obtain prior authorization from the Université Laval animal protection committee (CPAUL). CPAUL collaborates with veterinarians and care staff to ensure animal users and animal supply facility management comply with university policies, generally accepted ethical principles, and CCAC policies and guidelines.

Université Laval internal peer review committee

Université Laval’s internal peer review committee (CEIPUL) assesses research projects involving the use of animals that are not subject to external peer review by a funding body.

The Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC), which monitors the use of animals in research, teaching, and testing, requires every project involving the use of animals to undergo scientific review. Such review must be completed before projects are approved by an animal protection committee.

Pedagogical merit assessment committee

In accordance with CCAC policies and guidelines, the Pedagogical Merit Appraisal Committee (CEMP) assesses the pedagogical merit of teaching-learning activities involving the use of live animals. A positive assessment on pedagogical merit is mandatory and a prerequisite for any application to use live animals for teaching purposes to an animal care committee.
