Confidentiality and Privacy Policy

Université Laval is a public organization under the terms of the Act Respecting Access to Documents Held by Public bodies and the Protection of Personal Information (the “Act”) and is subject to its provisions.

By registering for this course, you authorize Université Laval to create a file that may contain personal information as defined in the Act. That information will be treated as confidential and will not be shared with anyone else. At Université Laval, only authorized personnel such as the person teaching the course and their administrative staff can access your information. These people need to access that information to do their job. Your personal information will be held according to the rules in effect at Université Laval and in accordance with the Archives Act (CQLR c A-21.1).

Research and publications

By registering for this MOOC, you authorize the professor responsible for the MOOC to use de-identified group data for publications and scientific presentations. This authorization includes, among other things, attendance data from the training site (registration, access), participation in discussion forums, evaluation results. At no time will it be possible to identify a MOOC participant. The following measures will be applied to ensure the confidentiality of information provided by participants:

  • The names and surnames of the participants will not appear in any report;
  • The individual results of the participants will never be communicated or disseminated;
  • Specific comments shared in the discussion forums will never be released or disseminated.

Applicable Laws and Competent Jurisdiction

Only legislation in force in the Province of Québec governs the Terms of Use. If there is any dispute, the Court of Québec, in the judicial district of Québec, will have jurisdiction.

Recognition of Competencies and Relationship between the MOOC and the Credit Courses Offered by Université

Enrolling in this online course does not impart student status to the participants under the terms of Université Laval's Charter (French only), Statutes (French only) and regulations. No right or privilege conferred by student status may be claimed in this regard.

The successful completion of this online course cannot replace, substitute for, or serve as the equivalent of an academic training credit offered by Université Laval. This course does not confer any recognition of academic achievement or exemption as defined in the Règlement des études (French only) for any study program.

Université Laval’s Information Security Regulation on the Security of Information Assets and Information Security Policy

Université Laval’s Information Security Regulation on the Security of Information Assets (French only) and the Information Security Policy (French only) are an integral part of the Terms of Use and provisions should apply with necessary adaptations.

Discussion forums shall be used pursuant to the provisions of this regulation, in particular section 5.2 (9), which states that: The user shall not use the informational assets placed at his disposal to distribute, transmit, receive, display or solicit pornographic material, child pornography, information of sexual, racist, threatening, intimidating, defamatory, harassing or violent nature, or hate or discriminating propaganda. (Information Security Regulation on the Security of Information assets (French only) section 5.2 [9]).

In addition, section 5.2 (11) of this Regulation states that:

The user shall not use an information asset in the following cases: to participate in chain letters, advertising for unauthorized purposes, to be involved in commercial activities, selling pyramid schemes or sending unauthorized mass emails. (Information Security Regulation on the Security of Information assets (French only) section 5.2 [9]).

Furthermore, it is forbidden to publish the work of someone else under your name in violation of the Copyright Act.

Participation in the discussion forums

Without limiting applicable provisions of Université Laval’s Information Security on the Use of Informational Assets Regulations, the following rules and regulations must be observed, particularly when participating in course discussion forums:

  • Respectful and courteous behaviour towards other authorized Subscribers and Users, and their comments must prevail at all times.
  • It is forbidden to make derogatory comments that expose someone or a group to hatred or contempt based on race, origin, colour, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age or mental/physical disability.
  • A post or a part of a post will be deleted if it contains one of the following elements:
    • Pornographic, vulgar, obscene or sexually explicit content
    • Illicit material (for example, that breaks a court order)
    • Heinous remarks
    • Threats or harassment
    • Personal attacks, insults or defamatory content
    • Threats or incitement to commit a crime

Université Laval can, at its sole discretion, withdraw a post or a part of it written by a participant on the discussion forum where it appears.

Participants assume complete responsibility of any content they post on the discussion forum. In no way do, this content represents the opinions of Université Laval and the latter dissociates itself from that content. Université Laval is not responsible for damages or losses incurred by authorized Subscribers and Users when using the discussion forums.

The participants agree to hold Université Laval, and its employees and representatives harmless from any legal proceeding, claim, fine, cost or loss, including court costs and lawyer fees, for any damages resulting from remarks or comments made by the participants on the course discussion forum.


Breaking the Terms of Use can lead to:

  1. Withdrawal of access privileges to the course. This can take place without warning, depending on the nature and seriousness of the breach.
  2. The obligation to refund to Université Laval all fees that the university may have to pay because of an unauthorized, fraudulent or illicit use of its informational assets or failure to abide by the Terms of Use.

Université Laval’s Responsibilities

Université Laval’s obligations towards the course are limited to the deployment of reasonable means to make the course available to participants, given the university’s material and human resources.

Thus, Université Laval cannot be held responsible for losses, damages, loss of income or inconveniences that might be caused to a person or entity when using Université Laval’s informational assets or in any case whatsoever, including cases or force majeure, and diminished or interrupted services, irrespective of the duration of the diminished or interrupted services.  

Université Laval may withdraw access privileges to a course when deemed appropriate, and for any reason considered appropriate, resulting or not from failure to comply with the Terms of Use; users have no recourse to damages of any nature whatsoever.
